HIPAA - Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996
I plan for  MED, Medical Billing program, to be in compliance with the HIPAA rules.  I am not a HIPAA expert and have no special knowledge.  I  have attended HIPAA seminars and have read and attempted to understand the new regulations.  This page will grow with new information, similar to the News and Info page.  I will keep the newest information on top and push down the older information.  Anyone may contact me with their opinion or comments via EMAIL.
Anyone using MED to file direct should file for an request for a Transactions and Code Sets Standards Model Compliance Plan & Deadline Extension Application at www.cms.hhs.gov/hipaa/hipaa2/ascaform.asp.  You must file this request prior to October 15, 2002.  All codes, CPT, HCPCS, ICD-9, DSM etc are your responsibility.  Med has the capability to handle these codes.  I do not sell or provide code but can assist in importing your code sets.

This statement will stay at the top. Stay current with the program changes.

07/20/2002 A Hipaa notice and authorization screen has been added to the patient update screen.  You may enter information about privacy notifications, authorization of release of information.  A report may be printed.

07/13/2002, I have added a lock screen button to the main menu.  You may lock your computer screen any time you wish.  The computer is not locked.  The MED program screen is blanked and the login/password screen appears.  You must re-enter your password.  MED tracks all logins, successful and aborted logins.  These changes should bring MED into compliance with the HIPAA security requirements.

07/11/2002, Anyone using MED to file direct should file for an request for a Transactions and Code Sets Standards Model Compliance Plan & Deadline Extension Application at www.cms.hhs.gov/hipaa/hipaa2/ascaform.asp.  You must file this request prior to October 15, 2002.  I plan to be in compliance with the Code Set Standards by October 15, 2003 with testing of the ANSI submission of Electronic Claims to begin late 2002.  Codes are always your responsibility.  I do not force use of valid CPT, ICD9, HCPCS or other codes.  The program provides files that can contain what you believe to be valid codes.  I will ensure that electronic filing of insurance forms comply with HIPAA.  I plan to upgrade the current NSF standard to the new ANSI standard.  I will change the ERA standard from NSF v2.01 to the new ANSI standard.  The NSF formats will still be available as will the print image format.  Security:  The latest version of the program has a login and password screen.  This will be improved in the coming months.  Most of my work for HIPAA will be in the security area.  Visit my web site weekly to keep up to date.
